Tire Pressure

If you are like many drivers, you probably don’t spend enough time thinking about your tire pressure. You add gas to your car, you change your oil, you make sure it stays nice and clean. But did you also know that you should check your tire pressure about every 1,000 miles?

Tire pressure can change drastically in different driving conditions. When you drive on hot surfaces, your tires can expand, reducing your tire pressure. When you drive on cold surfaces, your tires can shrink, increasing your tire pressure. All four tires should always have the same pressure. Maintaining good tire pressure not only helps to ensure that you drive safely, but it also helps you get the most gas mileage and wear from your tires.

Here are just a few more reasons why it’s important to check your tire pressure regularly:

Alignment

The pressure in your tires directly affects your wheel alignment. If you have lower tire pressure on one side of your car than the other, you run the risk of having your wheels fall out of alignment. When your wheels fall out of alignment, not only does your car drive slightly crooked (you’ll notice the steering wheel won’t be properly aligned), but you also run the risk of cracking your axel.

Remember: to maintain the integrity of your axel, it is important that all four wheels have the same tire pressure so that the car can drive straight and upright.

Life of the Tires

Your tires will eventually wear down. When your tires wear down, the treads become rubbed away, making the tires slip more easily in some driving conditions (such as rain). When you have uneven tire pressure, your tires wear down unevenly. Often, one tire will become worn down before the others, causing that tire (and part of the car) to become unstable in some driving conditions and increasing the risk of an accident due to slippage.

Smooth Ride

In case you didn’t know, having proper tire pressure also helps to ensure that you have a smooth ride. There are high end and low end tire pressure numbers that you can fall between. Low tire pressure equates to a smoother ride than high tire pressure. However, low tire pressure also decreases fuel economy and increases wear on your tires. Therefore, there is a trade-off to having a smooth ride.
